6 Week Module The Field School week runs from Monday to Friday
SU409 Introduction to Irish Archaeology 1. Attendance and participation in all scheduled and evening lectures. 2. Written test, (multiple choice), on the following Archaeological Periods
· Mesolithic and Neolithic Ireland · Bronze Age and Iron Age Ireland · Early Medieval and Viking Ireland · Medieval and post-Medieval Ireland
3. Written test, (multiple choice/ appropriate text selection), on field skills and techniques. 4. Written test (multiple choice/ appropriate text selection), specific to the excavation they have assisted on during the course. 5. 1500 word essay – Archaeological topic of their choice.
SU410 Archaeological Field Studies 6. Daily Notebook. 7. Context Sheet. - (completed) 8. Photographs - ( a selection of Excavation and Site photographs) 9. Section Drawing – ( a drawing of a specific part of the excavation they have worked on) 10. Excavation plan – ( a plan of the Excavation)
SU413 Data Analysis 11. Digitised Section drawing and plan. Field Skill tuition is provided in the following areas:- Excavation: Trowelling, Finds recording, Planning, Section drawing, levelling, Context sheet, Photography, Sampling. Finds: Processing, Drawing and Database entry. Drawing: Profiles, Wall drawing and section drawing. Survey: Plane table, Level, Theodite, EDM/Total station, GPS and AutoCAD Each week there are two formal lectures conducted by field school and visiting university staff that take place during the day and are of approximately one hour in duration. During the first week there are an additional two lectures and a series on in- house seminars. During the course a series of lectures are delivered on Tuesday evenings by visiting guest speakers. Each lecture is a minimum of 1.5 hours in duration.
