Bare Bones

An intensive 2-weeks course in excavation and recording procedures on site, plus 1-day field trip of archaeological sites on Achill island and/or nearby Clare Island in Clew Bay.

Are you looking for a course designed for those who want to get excavation experience only?
Then our two-week ‘bare bones’ Field School could be for you!


Do you want to get excavation experience but don’t want to bother with lectures or get academic credit? 

This course is particularly suited to people who have a small amount of excavation experience but are looking to add experience of excavating a multi-period site to their Curriculum Vitae/Resume.

Places are limited to 20 people so this offer is available on a first-come, first served basis!

Course tuition includes:

  Instruction in excavation methodology.
  Planning: Laying out a grid/plan and section drawing/AutoCAD and digitising plans.
  Surveying: plane table/level/total station.
  Appropriate use of various archaeological tools.
  Archaeological photography.
  Soil recognition.
  Finds processing.
  Artifacts: Piece plotting, identification, processing and recording
  The Harris Matrix (stratigraphic matrix) and context recording.
  Site restoration.

 Course fee:  €850  

Cost includes self-catering accommodation, local transport and 1- day-tour of archaeological sites on the island.
