Digital Survey and Mapping (AFS009)

The comprehensive course, a combination of our Basic and Advanced Digital Survey & Mapping courses, has been developed to meet the needs of Archaeologists, Architects, builders and for those wishing to gain experience and develop skills in Surveying and mapping.

Total Station Survey (All practical)

Set up Total Station and set out a line
Set out a grid on the site for planning
Survey in a large archaeological feature for a plan & also finds, section points etc.
Topo survey with Total Station, showing a raised area or depression
Upload survey into CAD and produce a drawing from the information surveyed

GPS Survey (all practical)
Hardware introduction
Set up GPS base and assemble radio and rover
Start Base Station
Calibration
Measuring points & Staking out
Topographical Survey (Break lines and break of slope)

AutoCad Civil 3D and 3D surfaces
Civil 3D Demonstration
Uploading points into Civil 3D (Practical)
Create a surface and orbit it to show archaeology (Practical)
Produce a grid surface and display it in DWF Viewer


Schedule
9am to 5pm daily
(for courses over 1 day, timings apply to each single day)
Lectures/practicals: 4 @ 9.30 – 10.30 am; 11 am – 1 pm; 2.30 – 3.30 pm; 4 – 5 pm

Criteria for award of credits: Full attendance

Level 1 Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Understand basic survey techniques and be comfortable with offsets, triangulation and dumpy levels
- Understand how a total station works
- Determine suitable base points and station points for a total station survey
- Assist in a total station survey and determine appropriately spaced points for ground plan and topographic points

Level 2 Learning outcomes
On completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Set up a total station at multiple station points without assistance
- Download completed survey points into AutoCAD Map 2006
- Complete an AutoCAD drawing using downloaded points (i.e. join the dots!)

Course format
Level 1 & 2: 3-days full-time (9.30am - 5 pm, no prerequisites)
