The Three Day Taster offers a variety of experiences, ranging from:
 
‘Starter’ of introductory lectures,
‘Main course’ of field-trips to megalithic tombs and Slievemore Deserted Village,
‘Dessert’ of classes in basic archaeological techniques.
Coupled with good weather, excellent hospitality and the stunning scenery of Achill, we guarantee that
participants will have whetted their appetite for archaeology.

Includes self-catering accommodation.

As part of the course you will participate in an ongoing excavation.
This course is ideal for beginners or interested amateurs.

Day 1:

9:15 am         Introduction to the course and brief history of field school–

9.30 am         What is archaeology?   Why study archaeology?

10.30             Lecture: Introduction to Irish Archaeology -

11:30 am       Break

11:50 am       Walk to Slievemore along Bog Road (weather permitting)

12:30 pm       Tour of site

1:00 pm         Lunch

2:00 pm         Excavation methodology and introduction to post-medieval ceramics,

                     context recording and matrix construction -

5:30 pm         End of formal day’s proceedings

Day 2:

9.00 am       Architectural survey of a selected house at the Deserted Village

11.00 am     Break

11.20 am     Continuation of survey followed by short seminar

1.00 pm       Lunch

2.00 pm       Walking to megalithic tombs and/or other sites

5 .00 pm      End of formal day’s proceedings

Day 3:

9.00 am       Basic surveying techniques

1.00 pm       Lunch

2.00 pm       Return to Centre to develop site drawings.

                   ‘Inking-in’ of plans.

4.00 pm       Discussion session

5.00 pm       End of formal day’s proceedings
