Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Specialist Archaeology Courses
Achill Archaeological Field School provides archaeology courses for all levels, from beginner to undergraduate to our very popular trainee supervisor course. Our location on Achill Island on Ireland’s spectacular Wild Atlantic Way offers multiple sites of archaeological interest from Neolithic megalithic tombs and Bronze Age roundhouses through to the 19th century world-renowned Deserted Village at Slievemore, immortalised by the Nobel laureate, Heinrich Boll, in his Irish Journal (Irisches Tagebuch).
Our beginner and intermediate archaeology courses provide a solid grounding in archaeology theory and practice, from experts in the field. For full information, see Introductory Courses.
Our Accredited Archaeology Field School Courses are aimed at undergraduate and graduate archaeology and anthropology students. We have the archaeology experience and the necessary field school infrastructure to provide the best possible academic and technical training for students throughout Ireland, the UK, USA and Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the world. These include our two-, four- or six-week modular courses which qualify for academic credit from the University of Galway (formerly NUIG). For a list of schools and colleges that have received academic credit through our courses please see the International University List. These courses are also open to students and other participants who do not wish to enrol for academic credit.
The Achill Archaeology Field School on Achill Island in Ireland was established to address the very real need for hands-on archaeology field school training for students of archaeology and anthropology from around the world. Core components include archaeology methodology, archaeology survey and archaeology recording procedures, environmental archaeology and introduction to archaeological ceramics.
These archaeology field school course components are backed up by weekly archaeology lectures provided by experienced Achill Archaeology Field School staff and visiting archaeologists from University of Galway, UCD. QUB, UCC, NUI Maynooth and other Irish universities.
A weekly Field Trip to local sites and monuments on Achill, Achillbeg Island and Corraun, with on-site lecture is held on Wednesday each week and is preceded by an in-house lecture on the Archaeology of Ireland from the Neolithic to the Post Medieval.
